Helping children through partnerships with schools.

Our research program is engaged in partnerships with local school districts in order to generate new knowledge about the role of language in literacy development. The success of our research program is built upon our collaborations with school personnel and parents. For the 2008-09 school year we are working with students in the Flint Community Schools and the Jackson Public Schools. As always, we are grateful to the many individuals who make our research activities possible. The research program would like to especially thank the teachers, principals, and office staff at Washington and Civic Park Elementary Schools in Flint, Michigan and Cascades Elementary School in Jackson, Michigan for their cooperation in the 2007-08 school year. We have had great partnerships and we appreciate your help in attaining our research goals.

Questions and Answers for Parents about Their Child’s Participation in Research:

How will I learn about research conducted in my child’s school by the UCLL research program?

You will learn about research being conducted by the UCLL research program in the form of a letter sent home with your child from school. The letter will describe the project, the activities in which your child would participate, and a consent form.

The consent form will provide space to agree or to not agree to your child’s participation in the research project. In order for your child to participate, the letter must be signed by the parent/caregiver indicating agreement and returned to the school as instructed.

If you agree to have your child participate, you may withdraw your consent at any time.

In addition, your child will be asked to participate in the project prior to beginning the research activities, and he or she also may withdraw at any time.

What will my child do as a participant in the UCLL research program?

If you agree to allow your child to participate in our study, he or she will be administered a variety of early language, writing, and reading tasks. Most children find these activities fun. A member of our research staff will work with your child during the school day in a quiet space in the school building. Your child will not be out of his or her classroom for more than one hour at a time. Some of the tasks require that your child be audio recorded.

What will happen with the information gathered about my child as part of the UCLL research program?

We will give your child’s teacher a summary of performances for all of the children in the classroom who participated in the project. We will not identify your child on an individual basis unless you have given us permission to do so. All information collected is confidential. Records will be kept confidential to the extent provided by federal, state, and local law. At the end of the project, the information we collect will be kept in a secure location in our building. Your child will not be identified in any reports on this study.

How will this research benefit my child, the school, and others?

The results of these activities will provide your child's teacher with information about your child's language skills. Armed with this knowledge, teachers can tailor instruction to best fit the needs of each student. This research will help schools better understand the language and literacy growth of all students. We will continue to contribute to academic journals so as to inform other researchers and the public of these important findings. We will also periodically post results on our website, keeping all participant information confidential.
