Strokes for Strokes
The 6th annual “Strokes for Strokes” Golf outing took place on July
8, 2009 at the Brookside Golf Course in Saline, MI. Stroke
survivors participated in a 9-hole scramble and enjoyed lunch
afterwards with friends and caregivers. Twenty-four golfers enjoyed
the outing, thanks to a beautiful day and a healthy supply of
volunteers to assist golfers and to help drive carts.
“Strokes for Strokes” began in 2004 as a collaborative effort
between Mike Shatusky, a few close friends, and physical
rehabilitation physician Dr. David Steinberg. Shatusky is a former
UM running back who had a stroke following heart surgery in 1997.
In the years following his stroke, Shatusky began focusing his
efforts on helping other stroke survivors regain their sense of
dignity, vitality, and sense of belonging to the community. “
Strokes for Strokes” was open to all local stroke survivors and
their caregivers.
Collaborators for this outing included St. Joseph Mercy
Hospital Rehabilitation Program, University of Michigan Aphasia
Program (UMAP), Glacier Hills Care and Retirement Center,
Evangelical Home of Saline, Heartland Health Care Center, Eastern
Michigan University and the Main Dish Kitchen of Ann Arbor.
UCLL staff and clients have participated in this great event
for years. We would like to especially thank staff and volunteers
who helped to make this a successful event!
