New IHA Director Announced - Professor Cheryl A. King
The following announcement was made by Janet A. Weiss, Vice
Provost and Dean of Rackham Graduate School, to the UM
Community:
I am delighted to announce that Professor Cheryl A. King, a
faculty member in the departments of Psychiatry and Psychology in
the Medical School and LS&A, has accepted the position of
Director of the Institute for Human Adjustment in the Rackham
Graduate School, effective September 1, 2009 for a five year
term.
Dr. King received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from
Indiana University in 1984. Before coming to the University of
Michigan in 1989, she worked briefly for the State of Wisconsin,
the University of Michigan-Dearborn, and Wayne State
University. At the UM, Dr. King was the Department of
Psychiatry’s first Director of Psychology Training. She is
currently Director of the Youth Depression and Suicide Prevention
Program, Chair of the Psychotherapy Competencies Committee, and
Chief Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry. She has been
elected to terms as President of the American Association of
Suicidology, President of the Association of Psychologists in
Academic Health Centers, and President of the Society of Clinical
Child and Adolescent Psychology. Her ground-breaking research has
focused on psychosocial interventions for youths and young adults
at risk for suicide, and the improvement of suicide risk assessment
instruments. This research has been supported by numerous federal,
state, and private funders, and has yielded an impressive record of
publication and professional impact. Dr. King is currently the
recipient of an NIMH Career Development Award for her work on
interventions for suicidal youth.
I am confident that the Institute will thrive under Dr. King’s
leadership. She brings vision, energy, broad clinical and
administrative experience, strong academic values, and the ability
to work collaboratively across disciplines to innovate with
faculty, staff, and students. She has an outstanding track record
of creative approaches to clinical practice, clinical training,
active engagement in applied clinical research, and the provision
of high quality, accessible services to individuals and families.
While serving as the half-time Director of IHA, Dr. King will
continue to pursue her successful program of research, and will
retain strong connections to her two academic departments.
I thank the IHA staff members and the other University
faculty who served on the Director Search Committee; we have been
meeting since December and the committee’s contributions were
essential in bringing the selection process to a successful
conclusion. Dr. King plans to begin meeting with IHA staff over the
next several weeks. I hope that you will join me in welcoming her
to the IHA community.
